A few months ago, a reader emailed asking me whether I would ever consider creating my own signature blend in a body oil and if so, what would I add to it?
And...so the lovely reverie began.
My first reaction was I’m a beauty writer/blogger, not a beauty product maker. And, I’m not one for the creative process behind an art. I mean I still can’t figure out when to stop pouring the champagne into a flute so it floats atop like a perfect picture. I always manage to spill some over. But, I was intrigued at the thought of creating an oil that would play out that elusive dream flourish of mine. Huile de Nav?
Yes, I’m still hoping some niche brand will pay homage to this blog. Until then, NYR Organic gives me…and you a pretty great alternative to premade blends. The purely vegan, 100% organically produced Almond Oil ($16) is a fun way to skip the beaded forehead and revel in the essential oil experience by creating your own blend with this carrier and other essences.
The great Brit brand Neal’s Yard Remedies offers up a slightly sweet, protein rich carrier that is non-greasy and absorbs on the spot. Used since the 16th century, Almond Oil is brimming with Vitamins B and E, which scientifically, it’s a powerhouse. The "Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology" reports that Almond oil has been successful for preventing damage to skin caused by UVB rays. This study tested the effects of UVB rays on the skin for a period of 12 weeks. Subjects who were treated beforehand with Almond oil experienced less photoaging of their skin. And, according to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Salisbury General Hospital in the UK, Almond oil has shown to reduce scarring. This finding encourages further research on the use of Almond oil to reduce scar formation after surgery.
Use it on its own? Sure, it makes a certain amount of sense to those of you who can't stand a scent. But, consider how charming it would be to create your own sensuous or even strident fun with blending with pure essences like these. Making your own oils will be as much fun as sniffing them. And, you don’t have to worry about suggested ratios as NYR Organic ensures you’ll receive safety tips with each essence as pure oils should be diluted with a carrier such as Almond Oil before applying to skin.
If you’re aiming for the progressive or exotic, consider clicking on Aftelier Perfume’s collection of botanicals like Clove or Honeysuckle, which will surely uncover a world of earthly delights and add that individualistic flair to your blend. Looking for an oil with a casual bite? Lavender and Vanilla pair well. Want a relaxed but lively experience? Patchouli will liven up the usual florals with intense depth.
DIY beauty doesn't have to stop at a body oil – plain or your bespoke blend. For organo-fans wanting to scrub up their legs or feet before using the sequel oil, you can also create a homemade body scrub for all tastes by using 1/2 cup of Almond Oil + 2 cups of Dead Sea Salts + 1 teaspoon of Vanilla (or any other essential oil you prefer). Follow with your body oil to tenderize skin and make skin velvety. Exfoliation on dry skin seems to get me softer skin.
