Malin+Goetz Mojito Lip Balm

From a family-run apothecary comes a lip balm truly worthy of the cult accolades it earns. Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz tag teamed to open Malin+Goetz, Chelsea’s hip apothecary in 2004, to help treat Matthew’s finicky skin plagued with outbreaks of rosacea, eczema, seborrhea and bouts of dry skin. The charismatic duo had one lofty goal: to transform technologically simplified treatments by using wholesome ingredients created for all skin types and tones.

And, they succeeded. From this quintessential line of tried n’ true basics, the Mojito Lip Balm ($12) is probably the purest form of a balm you’ll try. Formulated with no parabens, no colour, no harsh, unnecessary fillers, the balm is largely comprised of skin conditioning emollients offering strong film-forming and water-proofing properties with super-drenching dollops of palmitate.

The balm brings the most audacious blend of juicy essential fatty acids, which do nothing but nourish thoroughly. It's is more gel-like in consistency, crystalline in texture, but heralds a vibrant mint to those parched puckers seeking immediate relief upon application. The scent is a muted but persistent menthol, and not of the Wrigley spearmint gum variety. But, the balm is incredibly wearable ( stayed on through 2 servings of its namesake cocktail) and is full of high shine, which means you can slick the balm over lip liners without fear of seeing any of those dreaded feathery wisps seen from oilier glosses.

It's the contrasting coolness of mint which gives this gentle, caring balm a jazzy depth and makes you feel like you’re applying more than just a balm – you’re treating your lips with some scientific grade, chemically understood schooling developed under an instinctive eye with precision and passion for skin care. Yes, serious stuff this is.
